Allergology
In Spain, allergology is an officially recognized medical speciality. It covers the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of diseases produced by immune system mechanisms.
Allergology
What is an allergy?
An allergy is an exaggerated response of the immune system (hypersensitivity) that identifies certain harmless substances as harmful. The family history of allergies is very important, but the development of an allergy will also depend on environmental factors.
The substances that usually cause this type of reaction are:
- Inhalants or aeroallergens (house dust mites, pollens, animal skin derivatives, fungal spores)
- Food (milk, eggs, fruit, nuts, fish, seafood ...)
- Insect poisons (bee, wasp ...)
- Medications (anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, anaesthetics ...)
- Occupational (latex, flour ...)
- Contact (nickel, chrome, perfumes, dyes ...)
As a consequence of this inappropriate response, an inflammatory response will occur at the skin and mucous membrane that will lead to the different allergic diseases.
The most common allergic diseases are:
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) - with or without conjunctivitis
- Allergic asthma
- Urticaria (with or without angioedema)
- Atopic dermatitis
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Food allergy
- Drug allergy
- Anaphylaxis
In the allergology consulting rooms of Hospitales Universitarios San Roque we are trained to handle such allergic diseases, both in children and in adult patients. We have a series of tests in vivo (skin tests) and in vitro (laboratory). In addition, we develop a therapeutic plan adapted to the needs of the patient and taking into account:
- Measures to control the environment (deallergenization) and education of the patient and family
- Treatment with medication
- Treatment with immunotherapy (allergy shots)
