Human Anatomical Pathology is the branch of Medicine dedicated to studying the causes, development and consequences of disease by means of morphological techniques. Its ultimate purpose is a correct diagnosis of biopsies, surgical specimens, cytologies and autopsies. As far as its medical applications, it is basically concerned with human diseases, although it also encompasses experimental pathology and comparative pathology.

This unit's objective is to study surgical specimens and biopsies obtained at Hospitales Universitarios San Roque various outpatient facilities. Speed is of the essence in issuing reports, and it is also of paramount importance for other departments. 

Cytology, on the other hand, is a simple test that takes about three minutes to perform and is not painful.  It is the most effective way to detect Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the main cause of Cervical Cancer (CC) and it can also help detect this cancer in its early stages, thus helping ensure treatment is obtained in a timely manner.
