Cardiology
Cardiology is a medical specialty dedicated to studying heart disease, both organic -- affecting the valves, affecting valves, myocardium or coronary circulation-- as well as diseasesassociated with heart rhythm disorders; it also deals with the impact other systemic (vascular or other) diseases can play on the same organ.
Cardiology
Given the increased prevalence of coronary heart disease in the developed world, the demand for Cardiology has grown more than for any other medical specialty, and this field has also probably incorporated more diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive technical advances than any other specialty; which is why this specialty is now so closely related to Cardiac Surgery, given its key role in the short, medium and long-term treatment of heart disease.
At the Lanzarote Care Center offers advanced screening and diagnostic techniques thanks to which we can provide the following services:
- Cardiology Consultation
- Ecocardiography
- Stress Test
- Electrocardiograph
- Myocardial Spect.

At the Vecindario Care Center offers:
- Pacemaker and defibrillator check ups.
- Pre-surgery Check Up.
- Cardiology Consultation.
- Conventional Stress Test.

- Pacemaker Implantation.
- Defibrillator Implantation.
Our cardiologists’ main line of work focuses on the primary prevention of atherosclerotic disease, placing special emphasis on controlling cardiovascular risk factors (high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, smoking) as well as on monitoring chronic patients with a known cardiovascular disease to prevent new events (secondary prevention). In addition, we also offer a cardiology assessment for athletes in order to carry out the cardiovascular risk stratification when performing a physical activity.
With regard to the therapeutic management of cardiovascular diseases, Cardiology covers both the pharmacological treatment and the interventional treatment through catheterisation and stent implantation or through the implantation of cardiac devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators. Cardiology is closely related to cardiac surgery, a specialty that deals with the surgical approach of many cardiac diseases.
At Hospitales San Roque, the following services are available:

At our Non-Invasive Cardiology Unit:
- Electrocardiogram
- Conventional ergometry
- Transthoracic echocardiogram
- Transoesophageal echocardiogram
- 24-hour ECG Holter
- MAP or Blood pressure Holter
- SPECT ergometry (nuclear medicine)
- Multi-slice cardiac CT
- Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging
At our Invasive or Interventional Cardiology Unit:
- Haemodynamics. (Diagnostic and therapeutic catheterisation with stent implantation)
- Arrhythmias and electrophysiology. (Electrical cardioversion, catheter ablation)
- Pacemaker implantation
- Automated defibrillator implantation.
Upon Hospital Admission:

At the Cardiology Department of Hospitales Universitarios San Roque you will find a large team of qualified professionals and state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques to treat many different heart problems and offer comprehensive care for: coronary heart disease (angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction), heart valve involvement, heart failure, arrhythmias and myocardial diseases (hypertrophic, dilated and infiltrative cardiomyopathy).
Integral Cardiology services are focused mainly on preventing, diagnosing, treating and following up heart pathologies, with the help of a multidisciplinary team and the cutting-edge technology available for Cardiac Imaging, Haemodynamics and the Cardiac Surgery Unit.
At Hospitales Universitarios San Roque in Las Palmas, the following services are available:
Outpatient Consultations and Hospital Admission
During a cardiac consultation, the doctor will carry out an overall assessment of the patient’s past and family medical history and their lifestyle habits in order to establish the patient’s clinical history and prescribe the necessary diagnostic tests.
- A high-resolution cardiology consultation
- A sports cardiology examination
- Pre-operative assessment
- Pacemaker/Defibrillator Interrogation
- Electrocardiogram
- Holter monitor
- Blood Pressure Holter
- Stress test or Ergometry
- Cardiac Rehabilitation
- Hospital Admission
Non-invasive Cardiac Imaging is an important tool for the diagnosis of various cardiovascular pathologies. In addition to echocardiography, Hospitales Universitarios San Roque offers coronary CT scans and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. A coronary computed tomography (CT) scan is a non-invasive technique to detect coronary obstructions in patients at high cardiovascular risk, while cardiac MRI offers a better depiction of heart diseases.
- Transthoracic / Transesophageal / Bubble echocardiogram
- Coronary CT scan
- Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging
- Isotopic Perfusion Study (SPECT)
Haemodynamics - Interventional Cardiology Unit
This unit examines the state of coronary arteries, as well as the functioning of the heart and its valves, which allows us to make an accurate diagnosis and therefore choose the most appropriate treatment for each patient: from coronary artery disease (stent implantation), to the new percutaneous techniques applied to the treatment of structural heart disease and ischaemic heart disease.
- Diagnostic cardiac catheterization
- Coronary angiography together with an angiographic and haemodynamic assessment of left chambers.
- Haemodynamic assessment of the right chambers.
- Coronary Therapeutic Cardiac Catheterisation
- Implantation of state-of-the-art drug-eluting stents.
- Dilatation using drug-eluting balloons, cutting balloons and high-pressure balloons.
- Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation.
- Treatment of calcified lesions with rotational atherectomy (Rotablator).
- Treatment of chronic total occlusions with antegrade and retrograde techniques.
- Treatment of lesions in the left coronary trunk and with multivessel involvement.
- Treatment of bifurcation lesions with complex techniques.
- Catheter-Based Treatment of Structural Heart Disease
- Percutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
- Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO).
- Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defect (ASD).
- Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure.
- Percutaneous mitral repair (MitraClip).
- Pericardiocentesis and percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy.
- Implantation of single and dual chamber pacemakers / Implantable Defibrillators (ICD) / Cardiac Resynchronisation Devices / Subcutaneous Holter (Reveal).
Cardiac Surgery
The Cardiac Surgery service, led by Dr Enrique Rodríguez, an eminent figure in the field, offers the possibility of treating cardiac pathologies that require surgical treatment. Some of the most important procedures we carry out are coronary surgery without extracorporeal circulation (on the beating heart), valve replacement surgery and surgery for aortic aneurysms.
The Cardiac Surgery Unit works closely with cardiologists, intensivists and anaesthetists, thus forming a multidisciplinary team that allows us to offer the best guarantees during the surgical process, and also during the patient’s post-operative period.
Cardiac check-ups: are designed for people with cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, work-related stress, obesity, high cholesterol or high triglyceride levels, smoking or a history of (heart or brain) cardiovascular disease.
We also carry out sports cardiology examinations, for those who want to start doing intense physical exercise safely. That way we can make sure there are no previously undiagnosed heart diseases and the patient can exercise safely without risk.
