Haematology
As a specialty, Haematology and Haemotherapy includes four close related facets: clinical haematology, morphology and haemeatological biology, haemostasis and thrombosis and immuno-haematology and transfusional medicine.
The evolution of this branch of medicine is based on integrating all of this clinical and biological information, which have made it possible to better understand how disease is produced, thus helping develop more appropriate guidelines for clinical action.
This field of Medicine deals with:
- The physiology of blood and blood-forming organs.
- The clinical-biological study of diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs, and all aspects of their treatment.
- Carrying out and interpreting analytical tests related to these diseases or other types of processes that may, through different mechanisms, cause blood dyscrasias, as well as carrying out the necessary haematological laboratory tests in order to study, diagnose and assessment processes that affect a given organ or system.
- All aspects of transfusion medicine, such as obtaining and monitoring blood and blood products, including haematopoietic progenitors and their therapeutic use. Haematology and Haemotherapy is part of both the clinic and the laboratory areas as well as Haemotherapy, with the integration of these three aspects constituting the raison d'être behind this specialty.
Our services at Hospitales Universitarios San Roque include diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes and bleeding disorders (anemia, platelet disorders and leukocytes, leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma and heamorrhagic diseases and thrombosis); diagnostic procedures: blood count and coagulation and thrombophilia screening tests (predisposition to thrombosis); and bone marrow testing(morphology and cytogenetic immunocytometry).
