Neurology

Neurology is the medical specialty that studies the structure, function and development of the Nervous System in its normal and pathological states, using every technique for diagnosis and treatment that exists currently or may be developed in the future.

Neurology

Neurology entails providing comprehensive medical care for neurological patients and carrying out research in its field and its scope of action includes health care, teaching and research.

At Hospitales Universitarios San Roque, we diagnose and treat the most common neurological disorders, such as migraines or headaches, neuralgia and other special aches, dementia (including Alzheimer and other diseases) and epilepsy, as well as focusing on circular diseases of the brain (cerebral stroke due to thrombosis or haemorrhage).

We also examine patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, tremors, tics and other movement disorders, motor paralysis due to any cause (spinal, muscular or peripheral nerve disease), and, in general, any neurological diseases that may require the specialist's intervention at our Outpatient Clinic.

In order to diagnose and monitor these diseases, we have multiple techniques at our disposal that allow us to obtain all the necessary information in order to offer our patients the best possible care:

  • Using Computer Tomography (CT/Scan) and MRI we are able to create an image of the brain tissue- using radiological techniques- and detect structural damage (brain strokes, haemorrhages, tumors, etc.).
  • Electroencephalography allows us to detect electrical activity in the brain in order to study it, and is especially useful in diagnosing and monitoring epilepsy.
  • We use Electromyography and Electroencephalography to study nerve conduction and muscular response.  In studying peripheral nerve disorders (carpal tunnel syndrome, polyneuropathy, mononeuropathies), neuromuscular junction (myasthenia gravis) or nerve roots (compressions due to herniated discs, plexopathies, etc.).
  • Finally, the Doppler ultrasound allows us to study blood flow in the arteries leading to the brain.
