Urology

Its anatomical scope includes dysfunctions of the kidney and its adjacent structures, the urinary tract and the male genital tract (adrenal gland, kidney, retro-peritoneum and lower back, ureter, bladder, prostate, seminal track, urethra, pelvic floor structures, penis, scrotum, testis and epididymis).
Urology is often confused with Nephrology. This is a non-surgical medical specialty that deals with diseases that affect kidney function (purification, hormonal, regulating homeostasis and acid-base balance), as well as dialysis and hypertension.

The Urology Service at Hospitales San Roque in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is specialized in medical and surgical diagnosis and treatment of any andrological pathology, and we have the latest technology at our disposal to perform laparoscopic procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, ureteropyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction stenosis and partial nephrectomy for small kidney cancer.
Thanks to our state-of-the-art ultrasound scanners we are able to offer:
  • Penile Doppler ultrasound for erectile dysfunction (or male impotence)
  • Urinary tract exploration
  • Prostrate biopsy for prostrate cancer screening.
 We also deal with:
  • Micro-surgical vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy).
  • Lithotripsy for all sorts of stones using endoscopic surgery (ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy).
  • Laser therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • And extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL).

Our service also has a Urodynamics Unit, a test used to detect urine leakage.

This unit focuses on providing an accurate diagnosis of possible urinary disorders and urinary incontinence, by studying problems related to the function of the bladder, sphincter and urethra. In doing so, we can diagnose and understand the causes of urinary incontinence (urine leakage) and recommend the best treatment in each case. Urodynamic tests are given to both men and women.

Urinary incontinence is a very common pathology in the Canary Islands, affecting 1 in 3 women. Many people do not seek professional help, as they think urinary incontinence is just a part of getting older. However, the personal, romantic and social life of people suffering from this type of disorder can be significantly affected by it.

This test is performed on men to detect prostate problems and incontinence, and on women to detect urine leakage or prolapse (the descent of organs through the vagina).
A good study and diagnosis allow us to offer our patients the best possible results, which can be achieved either by anti-incontinence surgeries or various medical treatments.
